The City of Krk is the winner of the Eco City 2026 award. The award was presented on 21 October in Šibenik, as part of the 10th Days of Regional Development and European Union Funds. The Best City competition is organised by Gradonačelnik.hr, Jutarnji list and Ipsos.

According to the City's official announcement, the award was accepted on its behalf by Igor Hrast, Head of the Economic Affairs Section. It is Krk's first Eco City title and its eighth winning title in this competition.

What does the Eco City award recognise?

In this category, an expert jury assesses the submitted projects, measures and results achieved. The award thus highlights specific contributions to environmental protection and sustainable development; it is not a comprehensive measurement of the cleanliness of all Croatian cities.

Waste and energy at the heart of the nomination

According to the information presented in the nomination, in the City of Krk during 55.63 per cent of municipal waste was collected separately in 2024. The island system includes door-to-door collection, recycling centres, a sorting facility and a composting plant.

Three solar power plants — Treskavac, Ponikve and the Fire Station — together generate around 238,000 kWh of electricity per year. The investments listed also include energy renovation of public buildings and the transition of public lighting to LED technology, with reported average energy savings of around 75 percent.

These indicators point to the connections between municipal services, energy and city management. To monitor the impact of such investments, it is important to track the years to which the data refer alongside the results achieved.

The result of work by the city and the island community

The Primorsko-goranski savez statement of 23 October emphasises long-term planning and cooperation between the city administration, utility companies and residents. It highlights the continuity of the work of the City of Krk, headed by Mayor Darijo Vasilić.

For Ekologija.hr, this news is an opportunity to focus attention on examples connecting local decisions with measurable environmental results: how the system is organised, what has been achieved and what other communities can learn from it.
